Z-RAM .68 Projectiles: Solid Steel or a Coated Steel Core?

Z.68v2 is described as a solid CNC-machined steel projectile. The military-green coated ball instead has a chrome-steel core inside a polymer shell; the steel content does not make their outer surfaces or shape the same.

The 8.5 g Z.68v2 and military-green coated .68 balls both contain steel, but their construction is different. Z.68v2 is CNC-machined solid steel with a shaped D-form; the coated ball has a chrome-steel core inside a plastic jacket. Their similar 8.5 g weight labels therefore do not describe the same outer material or the same projectile shape.

The outside is not the same as the core

On the solid-steel projectile, the named material describes the projectile body itself. On the coated ball, the steel is the core and the polymer shell is a separate outer layer. A steel-core label should not be shortened to “the same solid-steel projectile, just green.”

The coated-ball description gives the jacket a functional role: it is intended to reduce barrel wear and support reliable feeding. That is the offer’s stated reason for the coating, not simply a color choice. The listing does not provide a quantified wear comparison against the Z.68v2.

What the steel-durability explanation actually compares

In the first video, Daniel says steel projectiles do not deform or break as quickly as the copper-and-nylon mixtures he discusses. His example concerns damage after hitting hard material. It explains why he emphasizes steel’s durability.

That passage is not a controlled comparison of these two linked products. In particular, the current military-green ball is described as chrome steel with a polymer jacket, not as the copper-and-nylon mixture in the film. A general remark about one composite should not be reassigned to another construction.

Durability, shape and fit answer different questions

The second film presents the CNC-machined Z.68v2 and its durability claims. Current product descriptions also call both linked offers reusable, but neither states a measured repeat-use count for this comparison. Reusable construction is a product characteristic, not evidence that every recovered projectile remains unchanged.

Shape still matters separately: the Z.68v2 listing specifies an FSR-style form and corresponding feed requirements, while the other offer is a round ball. Similar weight and a shared nominal caliber do not establish interchangeable feeding behavior. Both listings exclude paintball-game use, so a polymer jacket does not make the steel-core product a paintball.

The practical distinction is to read the outer material, internal construction and shape together. That gives a much more accurate description than “steel ammunition” alone, without treating either material as a universal winner.

The material comparison behind the durability claim

Daniel contrasts steel with the copper-and-nylon mixtures he discusses. It supplies the material question, but is not a test of the current green polymer-jacketed ball.
