Umarex HDR50/TR50 Tuning Comparison: Z-Extension, PowerKit and HPA up to 47 Joules

Welcome to the Z-RAM YouTube channel. Daniel keeps the introduction brief because there is enough to do today: the video introduces all the tuning kits offered in the Z-RAM shop, linked below in the video description. The tuning kits are then tested in combination with each other.

The PowerKit consists of a PowerPin and valve and is already installed here. The Z-Extension is also already installed. There is a tuning barrel with a barrel extension, the new Modify Pin and a complete conversion kit from CO2 to HP, comprising the adapter, Mamba hose and bottle. The buttstock shown here is also available in the shop. All the tuning kits shown here can be bought in the Z-RAM shop.

Four test configurations, with the tuning barrel and Z-Extension throughout

The results for the standard HDR50—the 11-joule version shown here—have already been presented in another video. That test is therefore omitted here, and the comparison begins directly with the standard version plus the extension: the 11-joule version as it is, with the standard valve, standard pin and extension.

The second test uses the standard version plus the extension, with the PowerKit—the pin and valve—also installed. The third test uses the HDR50 with the extension and the PowerPin from the PowerKit, but without the valve; the Modify Pin is also installed. After that variant has been tested, the setup is converted to HP. The Modify Pin is then omitted, leaving only the extension and PowerPin, without the valve. The setup is operated with HP, using the adapter, Mamba hose and bottle shown here. The results will be examined together again at the end.

All these tests will use the Z-RAM Z50 projectiles, currently available for pre-order in the shop. The extension can also currently be pre-ordered. The tuning barrel will remain installed for all tests. There are thousands of possible combinations, and Daniel will not test every single one here. All the tests use the long tuning barrel and the extension; the PowerPin, valve and Modify Pin are what vary.

A fresh capsule will be used for each of the three tests above, and every test is conducted without the chamber block. Daniel currently has only one of these Z50 projectiles, handmade by him. The order is in production and should arrive in mid-October 2022. That is also why the video has to be cut after every shot: Daniel must run to the target, retrieve the projectile from the box, put it back in and make the next shot. Otherwise, the video would take too long. There is therefore a cut after each shot, and only three shots will be made per tuning version. The individual variants and their results will be examined more closely later.

The stated roles of the Z-Extension, PowerPin and Modify Pin

The power kits presented here are currently the best available for the HDR50: the Z-Extension, PowerKit and Modify Pin, as well as this tuning barrel. Further increases could only be achieved by using longer barrels and screwing more Z-Extensions together. The Z-Extension can be extended as desired: two can be screwed together, and so on. This only makes sense with enough pressure and a long barrel.

The recommendation applies to every marker modification. The extension and Modify Pin are mentioned together, but their relationship in this sentence is unclear. Whether converting to HP or even combining modifications, the PowerPin should always be used anyway. It is made of steel, whereas the standard pin is made of aluminum and therefore cannot withstand much more energy. The aluminum pin could bend at very high energies. The steel pin from the PowerKit should therefore always be used. It is a little shorter than the aluminum pin, opens the valve a little earlier and closes it a little later, providing a little more energy through the valve and a little more inflow.

When the Modify Pin is used, the valve shown here is no longer needed, but Daniel would still use the PowerPin. In any case, the Z-Extension provides a larger chamber volume, which will definitely deliver more energy, especially when the whole setup is used with HP.

In particular, the variant that leaves out the valve and uses the Modify Pin ensures that more air flows into the chamber. With the Z-Extension, there is also more space for that additional air to enter and be stored for the next shot. That is why, when using the Modify Pin without a valve here, the recommendation is definitely to use an extension to get the most out of the marker. Since the marker then operates with much more energy, a steel pin is again recommended instead of an aluminum pin: the pin from the PowerKit shown here, which will bring additional performance again. The following review will examine that more closely.

The shop selection and the video's legal warning

As already stated, all the tuning kits shown here can be found in the Z-RAM shop linked below. The shop also offers tuning kits for other Umarex models, such as the HDR68, HDS and so on, or the Tiberius FSC, plus all kinds of projectiles, including Z68 projectiles, Killer Spikes and much more. Be sure to visit the shop: there is something for everyone.

At this point, the video's warning states that installing such tuning kits is not allowed in Germany. It states that tinkering with and modifying the marker is not allowed, and that the marker must not reach more than 7.5 joules in Germany with the ammunition used. Abroad, the situation is different again: users must familiarize themselves with the applicable laws and check for themselves what is and is not allowed. They should also inform themselves about what is and is not allowed in Germany. This is not legal advice from Daniel or anything of that kind. Z-RAM is allowed to offer and sell these parts, but users are not allowed to install them in Germany.

Everything is ready, and the video moves to the chronograph to test the different tuning variants with Z50 projectiles. The gun is loaded; the projectiles are shown here, and the last shot uses the 6.3 g projectile. Daniel pushes the capsule. It is now armed, and shooting begins: five shots will now be made like this.

The final test interruption and the standard HDR50/TR50 result

Test 4, shot two. Unfortunately, the final test comes to nothing further because, on the last shot, the projectile flew under the target and against the wall behind it, and then bent after all. Daniel considers the 490 FPS meaningful enough, however. The results are then examined together.

The results have been brought together and listed clearly here. The first column shows the results of the clip inserted from one of Daniel's previous videos. That was the standard HDR50, without tuning or anything else, just as delivered. It reached a maximum of 280 FPS, which is about 15 joules.

Z-Extension and PowerKit results: 25, 28 and 30 joules

In the first retest with the extension and tuning barrel, the result was 361 FPS: an increase of 81 FPS compared with the standard version. With just the tuning barrel and Z-Extension, the HDR50 already reached 25 joules. That is quite decent.

The next test used the HDR50 with the Z-Extension, tuning barrel, restrictor from the PowerKit and firing pin from the PowerKit. It achieved a maximum of 380 FPS—another 19 FPS on top—and even reached 28 joules.

The next test also had the Z-Extension fitted, the tuning barrel installed and the firing pin from the PowerKit installed, but not the restrictor. The valve was left out and the Modify Pin installed instead. The complete setup produced another 10 FPS, bringing the result to 30 joules.

The HPA result: 490 FPS and 47 joules

For the last test, the setup was upgraded to HP: the HDR50 had the Z-Extension, tuning barrel and firing pin from the PowerKit. The second shot reached 490 FPS. That is 100 FPS more than without HPA, giving a result of 47 joules—and with this short barrel. It did have the barrel extension, but it was basically still a relatively short barrel.

Viewers can now imagine what results the setup would produce by screwing the component mentioned here into the barrel. The source gives the numbers 14, 16 and 18, but does not clearly identify the component or the units. Z-RAM will certainly test that. As already stated, there are thousands of possible tests. A few have now been demonstrated here, and Daniel considers the results impressive.
