Z.68v2’s Rounded Sides: What Changed Without Changing 8.5 g

The earlier Z.68v2 presentation describes rounder sides intended to reduce contact and the chance of catching in the barrel or magazine. It keeps the stated 8.5 g weight, separating a shape change from a weight change.

Z-RAM Z.68v2 8.5 g D-form steel projectiles

Z-RAM’s earlier Z.68v2 presentation explains the rounded side profile as a way to reduce the surface contacting the barrel and the chance of catching in the barrel or magazine. Daniel states that the weight remains 8.5 g, the same as the predecessor discussed in the comparison. The change being explained is therefore the projectile’s profile, not a move to a heavier weight.

The side profile has a job beyond identifying the version

In the comparison, the presenter points to the larger side area of the earlier Z.68 design and the smaller contact area of v2. He links the curves to less friction and easier passage through the relevant barrel and magazine. That is Z-RAM’s stated design rationale for the rounded sides—not simply a cosmetic difference visible in a product photograph.

The useful distinction is between the whole projectile shape and the portions that meet surrounding surfaces. Two projectiles can carry the same weight label while presenting different side profiles. A shared 8.5 g specification does not tell you whether their contact surfaces are the same.

The film explains that intended benefit qualitatively. It does not give a measured friction coefficient, a percentage reduction or a controlled before-and-after failure rate. The design explanation should not become a promise that every feeding problem disappears.

Sides, rear cup and chamfer are separate features

A second Z-RAM introduction, this time for the 10 g Z.68v2, calls out the rear cup and a chamfer as well as CNC-machined stainless steel. The presenter connects the rear cup with the gas acting on the projectile and describes the chamfer as a flight-stabilization feature. Those comments concern that 10 g presentation; they are not a measured aerodynamic comparison with the earlier 8.5 g sample.

This helps make product descriptions easier to read: rounded sides describe the side profile, a rear cup describes the back, and a chamfer describes another shaped edge or transition. They are not three names for an increase in projectile weight.

What the current v2 offers confirm

The current 8.5 g and 10 g listings both describe solid CNC-machined steel, an FSR-style D-form and a stated diameter of 17.35 mm. Their different weight labels identify two current v2 offers; the historical same-weight comparison was between the earlier design and the 8.5 g v2 shown in that film.

Keep that comparison separate from v2 versus v3. The Z.68v2 and Z.68v3 identification guide addresses the later version names. Here, the added information is why Z-RAM changed the side profile and how that differs from changing mass or describing the rear geometry.

These are solid-metal projectiles, not paintballs for paintball games. A shape explanation also does not extend the exact product’s compatibility to an unlisted feed system.

The current 8.5 g Z.68v2 offer: six solid CNC-machined steel projectiles with the listed FSR-style D-form and 17.35 mm diameter. This is the weight discussed in the historical side-profile comparison.

The original explanation of the rounder side profile

Daniel compares the earlier Z.68 design with the 8.5 g v2 and explains the intended contact and friction difference. The spoken comparison, rather than the version suffix alone, supplies the answer here.

The short names the rear cup and chamfer of the 10 g v2, giving a separate feature-level explanation. It is not an independent friction test of the two historical 8.5 g designs.
